CHAPTER FOURTEEN

All the while I was trying to juggle all of this investigation stuff, I still had my problems perfecting my potion.

My lucky cauldron, as well as a replacement potion rod, were things Aunt Emma-Sue said she’d take care of, but it didn’t mean I couldn’t experiment in the meantime.

But to do that?

I needed supplies.

Back to Herbs, Potions, and Posies once more, in spite of how rude I was treated my last go round.

I didn’t want to provoke Deacon any more than I needed to, so I was seeking to get in and out without much drama.

But I never seemed to get what I sought.

Right there in the potion section was my favorite person in the whole wide world.

Except not.

Garnet Guillory was currently browsing the alchemical components aisle, and right by her side was her new boy toy, Jackson.

“I need something to really win them over. A million-dollar idea, Jax. So, they’ll want to license me on the spot.”

I stepped quietly, pretending to browse an adjacent aisle and hoping that she wouldn’t peer through and notice me.

“You’re going to nail this, babe. Knock it right out of the park. Who do they have there that can compete with a witch of your skill?”

She grumbled. “You can see my brilliance, but those judges... they’ll see a younger prettier face like that Florence woman. Or Fern. Ugh, thinking Fern is a young pretty face.”

“You’re more beautiful than any of them, and they all know it deep down.”

Laying it on a little thick there, aren’t you, Jackson?

“You know, love,” Jackson began. “I’m going to have to take the day off to support you whenever they reschedule that competition.”

“Yes, and...?”

“I’m all out of sick days! They won’t pay for me taking any more breaks.”

“Aw. Don’t you worry about that, dear. I’ll take care of you if they won’t.”

They then proceeded to kiss, something I aggressively tried not to look at.

“You’re absolutely the greatest, Garnet. You’re truly the gem of my world.”

And yet somehow the words were more disgusting than all of them.

But it was pretty clear to me now that Jackson was using Garnet as a sugar momma, regardless of if it was based on true love or not.

It made me wonder if that would lessen his desire to kill. If he was taken care of, there was no reason to lash out at his supposed father for money reasons, was there?

I kept browsing the aisles, even if I had no interest whatsoever in a new stirring rod. Or any rod at all for that matter.

“Excuse me? Excuse me!” A shrieking yet all too familiar voice rang out.

I turned to face her. “Hello, Garnet.”

“What are you doing here?” she said, standing tall over me. Which wasn’t as impressive as she hoped it to be.

“Yeah, what are you doing here?” Jackson echoed when he noticed his girlfriend striking a pose.

The two of them had made their way to my aisle. Classic Garnet going out of her way to look for trouble with me. “Garnet, this is a public space.
